Skilled Migration

Australia offers a General Skilled Migration programme which is designed for people who are not sponsored by an employer and who have skills in particular occupations required in Australia.

Applicants must be over 18 and under 45 years of age, with good English language ability, and recent skilled work experience or a recently completed eligible Australian qualification.

Applicants must also have skills and qualifications for an occupation listed on Australia's Skilled Occupation List (SOL). The SOL lists all eligible occupations for General Skilled Migration, and the number of points awarded for each.

  • Professionals  - which may qualify you with 50-60 points of a possible total 60 points;
  • Associate Professionals - which may qualify you with 40 points of a possible total 60 points;
  • Tradespersons and Related Workers - which may qualify you with 60 points of a total 60 points.

Skills Recognition

In Australia no single authority assesses or recognises all overseas qualifications. Many professional, government and other organisations are involved, depending on the type of qualification or occupation and whether the assessment is for the purpose of migration or employment in a particular State or Territory of Australia.

Completing a skill assessment is not an assessment of your suitability for employment or an indicator of the likelihood of obtaining residency in Australia.

Once you undertake an assessment for your skills, from the relevant assessing authority, you must provide evidence of this. Please note that each assessing authority may have different procedures, time frames and fee's.

It is also important to note that some States or Territories in Australia have different licensing and registration procedures for different occupations, you may need to obtain the appropriate licensing or registration before being able to commence employment. In some cases, your overseas qualifications maybe recognised and exempt you from licensing or registration in Australia. We can advise you on this,

English Language

To be able to work in Australia, you must have sufficient English language ability.  This is known as 'vocational' English. Generally, you will be required to sit the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test to evidence your English language ability.

A higher level of English may be required for certain occupations. You can find out if your occupation requires a higher level of English by contacting the assessing authority for your nominated occupation.
